Hear to Help Japan! - A Special Interview Tonight

Hey folks,

The last few weeks have been fairly slow, and I apologize for not doing a better job of keeping you all updated on the show. We're just now getting around to booking most of July, but I'm fairly certain that many of you will find something to be excited about in terms of our forthcoming schedule.

With that being said, I want to talk to you about tonight's program. We've got a very special interview and corresponding live performance line up for you.

Sayaka Yabuki and Tait Reed of Noise Clinic have put together a benefit concert for the victims of last march's devastating earthquake in Japan that will be taking place on Tuesday, July 5th at the Catalyst Atrium.

Featuring a bevy of local acts, and headlined by Noise Clinic themselves, the Hear to Help Japan benefit show is a stark reminder of the power that music and live performance can have, going on to positively affect the lives of individuals who won't even be present at the concert.

Additionally, Sayaka and Tait have arranged for Gyo Rai Gyo, an instrumental avant-garde rock two-piece from Japan, to come perform on our program.

Tune in to 88.1fm tonight at 7pm to hear Sayaka and Tait talk about putting on the benefit, and what it means for both them as well as the millions of Japanese citizens who have been displaced by the earthquake.

The Blank Tapes on The Rising Tide tonight!

Hey all,

It's graduation time for UCSC students, and yours truly has been busy getting things in order to move on from the world of education, so I will keep this short. Thahttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gift being said, don't fret about the fate of the show, as we will continue to bring to you the best and brightest of local music and beyond throughout the entire summer! We'll be sticking around at the usual time slot of 7pm on friday nights!

That brings me to our guests for the evening, The Blank Tapes.

The Blank Tapes unique take on surf rock and indie rock places them in the company of other San Francisco-based luminaries like Sonny & The Sunsets, Beulah and Ty Segall. The group, fronted by charismatic jack-of-all-trades Matt Adams, have been at it for 5 years, gaining a following that has shifted and grown through the group's numerous releases.

On tonight's program, the Blank Tapes will be our guests in the studio and tell us what they have in store for 2011.

Palmz on The Rising Tide tonight!

Hey all,

We've got a great show for you tonight! Plenty of great new local music from a half dozen local artists and much more to play for you all on The Rising Tide. With that being said, let me introduce you to our guests for the evening, Palmz.

Palmz are a group whose sound is chiefly indebted to 50s and 60s girl group and beach pop music. Thematically, lead singer Lexie Corfiatis' lyrics about love and loss strike a similar chord to groups like Puro Instinct, The Sandwiches, and Best Coast. However, don't count Palmz among some of the many bands jumping onto the "back to the beach" sort of movement in modern indie rock, for this group flies it's freak flag proudly, penning songs about aliens and paying tribute to one of rock n' roll's greatest institutions, The Velvet Underground, with their cover of I'll Be Your Mirror.

Palmz will be coming onto our show to talk about their previously mentioned show taking place this Saturday at 105 Pioneer St., where they will perform alongside Rising Tide alums Blackbird Blackbird, Old Arc and Seattle's own Seapony, as well as to talk about what 2011 holds for the group.

Zine of the Week (13 May 2011): Fruit Yoga! For All Ages!

Looking for a cheery distraction as school for most students comes to an end for the summer? Try Yoga or better yet Fruit Yoga! For All Ages! This zine is all about ridiculously awesome (and adorable) art showing off the basics of yoga. It may not be a good substitute for something like Yoga to The People in the bay, but at least it'll put a smile on your face.

I recently sat down with this zine at the beach before trying out some of the poses, a mistake I promise not to make again in the future, more because I have no balance than anything else.

Beggar and The Coal - Live on KZSC!

I first met Rob Fidel at an open mic night at the Porter College dining hall. With Brittany Powers performing background vocals and banjo and my good friend Coryann Pitts singing and playing violin, Rob & co. crafted beautiful and delicate folk music. A few weeks after our first meeting, I featured Rob, Brittany, and Cory on my own radio show in Spring 2010.

Since his last performance on KZSC, Rob has formed a new group Beggar and The Coal. Brittany Powers still sings and plays banjo; the band also features Emily Judd on Cello, Ayden Graham on Violin, Vocals, and Guitar, Jeremy Lyon on Guitar, Vocals, and Harmonium whenever he finds himself in Santa Cruz. Oh - and Rob also plays the Glockenspiel.

Please join me in welcoming Beggar and The Coal to KZSC on The Rising Tide, this coming Friday May 13th (dun dun dun!). The radio show starts at 7:00 pm, streaming online at http://www.kzsc.org . Your ears will thank you for it.

The Rising Tide is excited to welcome acoustic songstress Dina Maccabee on May 20th!

Dina Maccabee is a violist, violinist, vocalist, and songwriter living in San Francisco. Her new recording of original songs was released 10/12/2010 in collaboration with Toby Summerfield on Antephonic Records (Chicago). In addition to her work with Real Vocal String Quartet and Ramon and Jessica, she performs in many styles and many bands, from Middle Eastern Psych Rock to 60′s Brazilian Tropicalia. She has composed scores for Shotgun Players theater company, Just Theater, and several Bay Area filmmakers. Her string arrangements have been published under the imprint of Strings Magazine, and her performances are featured on many studio recordings. Tours with Carla Bozulich, Vienna Teng, and Beth Custer have taken Dina across the country and around the world, while recent performance highlights include opening for Primus on New Years Eve, warming the crowd up for Sean Hayes at the Independent, and sharing a bill with Vasen.

Zine of the Week (6 May 2011): Steampunk Magainze

Why, how do you do?

This week's zine is part of a series called Steampunk Magazine put out originally by one of my favorite distros in Southern California, Strangers In A Tangled Wilderness. I recently pulled out my moth-eaten, coffee stained belongings stored "carefully" in a box in a friends attic and came across the first issue again. For those of you who are interested in being transported to a technologically advanced (in a fashion) Victorian era or learning how to create it, in your home, you'll want to pick up this zine series.

These zines are offered for free on-line although if you can find the printed ones and lay your hands on them, then I recommend that you do. These zines are beautifully done with amazing short stories, essays on a steampunk society, DIY Steampunk crafts, and interviews with steampunk bands. Also, if you're looking to survive the apocalypse, check out their special Steampunk Guide to the Apocalypse.

Outside Lands 2011

Ah, summertime! A time for bike riding, spending countless hours at the beach, and of course hitting up some amazing local live music! California produces music festival after music festival around this time of year, and I'm here to let you know about the one that is happening in San Francisco on August 12th, 13th, AND 14th 2011! It's SF's Outside Lands, which takes place every summer in Golden Gate Park in the city. This event is a huge highlight of the season for Bay Area locals and visitors alike, as it always acquires some of the finest bands of today's indie/alternative music scene, as well as artists of today's electro scene.

I myself had the opportunity to work a day of the festival last summer, and this year I am attending as a guest. The tickets are for all three days, and the line up is proof that they are worth every penny! Though there are bands from all over the world playing at this event, I'm focusing on the local ones in this article because after all, that's what The Rising Tide is all about!

Zine of the Week (29 April 2011): Floating

This week's zine is another stellar production of Brass Tacks Press. The zine floating was published posthumously in two installments. It's full of more art that will blow your mind or, if anything, inspire you to create your own art zine (hopes and dreams...). The zine is about heads, well it's about, heads floating away due to a drug-induced phenomenon.

Full of surreal sketches and flying chickens (see above), this is another zine that you must check out. Furthermore, this zine is full of great sketches and small barbs aimed at Los Angeles.

The Best Friends on The Rising Tide tonight!

Hey all,

It's been an exhausting last couple of weeks, but nothing's going to slow down The Rising Tide! As you may have noticed from our sidebar, we've got a slew of wonderful performances to look forward to in the month of May! Interviews with Pangolin, The Ian Fays, The Beggar and The Coal, and more, so keep an eye out on the blog for more information about our upcoming guests.

Speaking of which, it's my pleasure to introduce you to this week's guests on The Rising Tide, a band by the name of The Best Friends.

A 5-piece consisting of UCSC students who all met in the Stevenson dorms in their freshmen year, The Best Friends bring together the best of roots rock, r&b and funk in a way that echoes artists such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and George Clinton. The group's cooperative ethic is best seen in a live setting, where the band members share the front stage by taking turns at the microphone. It is here that the group really thrives, whether it be powering through their own original material or laying down an authentic cover song or two, for The Best Friends are the closest thing Santa Cruz has to a legit party-all-night band.

The group is coming onto The Rising Tide tonight to talk about their upcoming shows (including their May 11th show at the Crepe Place with Good People and The Jolly Llamas), possible future recordings, and whatever else 2011 has in store for the group.

Electroswing: Roaring 20s Remixed

I first heard of the "electroswing" genre on this past New Years Eve. Dressed in my best 20s flapper attire, I drove to a club in downtown Los Angeles ready to get my groove on at mobster style, prohibition era party. The event flyer advertised a night of "electronic jazz and prohibiton remixes" – I was beyond curious to hear what this music genre would sound like. As I made my way into the club, my ears were greeted with the glorious sounds of swing music combined with a heavy, dancy beat. This was it – the whole party was worth these few bars of music. Electroswing music instantly became my new best friend.

Since that fateful NYE night I have been on a wild goose chase in search of electroswing DJs. After spending an hour on Google I came across the website of Austrian DJ Parov Stelar, whom, according to the Prague Post, is the originator of the electroswing genre. His song Booty Swing off of the album The Paris Swing Box EP (2010) is my favorite electroswing song and soon to be yours too.

Zine of the Week (22 April 2011): The Children's Guide to Astral Projection

One Week Haitus, and you thought I was at Coachella fest. Well, ha, I was actually locked away all by my lonesome with enough new zines to become a prime candidate for the show Hoarders. To quickly mention Coachella fest one more time, if you were there I don't want to hear about it anymore, but I might read about it, if you'd unstick your faces from the internet and make a zine about it.
Now, this week's zine is The Children's Guide to Astral Projection available through brass tacks press, an awesome art zine that you can view free on-line, though you could buy it (and should...support your local zinester- blah blah blah).

A selection of the art zine seen above gives you an idea of how awesome the artwork is. This zine was made by J.A. Homes whose art is scatterbrained and wonderful. This zine is huge, it's art-insane and it's awe inspiring as well as the best Children's Guide to Astral Projection that I have ever read.

The Rat Trap on The Rising Tide tonight!

Hey all,

As you all know, our show has moved to 7pm on friday nights! You can tell your friends about our move by showing them our fly new poster!

As such, we have a very excellent show for all of you tonight!

Our guest for tonight's Rising Tide are a local Santa Cruz band by the name of The Rat Trap.

This five-piece features a number of young Santa Cruz musicians whose work demonstrates a knack of song-writing far beyond their years. The Rat Trap's music draws upon the familiar northwestern indie rock sounds of Modest Mouse and The Shins, but with a decidedly folk-rock turn that also recalls Bill Callahan and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy at times.

The group's first album (the cover art can be seen above) The Western Boundary was released just last month, but that doesn't mean that the band is resting on their laurels. In fact, they'll be coming on our show tonight to talk about their forthcoming show with Dominique Leone at the Abbey this Saturday, April 23rd, as well as what the rest of 2011 holds for this promising young group!

We will be welcoming The Love Dimension to the show! The Love Dimension is a San Francisco indie band with an awesome Garage/Punk/Psychedelic sound to them. Zine of the Week (8 April 2011): Hot Topik

Looking for something to stare at as an alternative to skool and the monotony of life. Don't worry I have you covered on this one. Well, Matt Furie and Sam Gaskin have got you covered with an art zine full of t-shirt designs for "goth-rockers' who hang out around the mall.

Unfortunately, to all you zinesters and zine lovers, out there this zine costs money. On the bright side it's printed with soy based inks on 100% recycled paper meaning you'll have to shell out up to $5 depending on where you buy the zine. This zine is great to flip through and a lot of fun for ideas, if you and your friends ever get bored. Use it as a coffee table zine for your hip friends and their ironic mustaches, or buy it, burn it, cherish it, you can even stash it in the bathroom for guests with time on their hands.

Magic Trick (Tim Cohen), Corpus Callosum, Man Go and more on tonight's Rising Tide!

Hey all,

Things are changing on The Rising Tide, that's for sure. Starting next week, we'll be on air from 7pm to 8:30 on friday nights.

Although we'll be programming for a half hour less than we have been, you can be assured that we will be doing our best to promote up and coming local independant artists in the time that has been given to us. That being said, I must be frank in stating that there are a few very specific reasons for the timeslot change.

In short, due to the actions taken by some previous guests on the show we are now standing on very thin ice as a program. I don't want to labor too much on this right now, as I'd rather talk about the program we are putting on tonight, but I feel like it's something I will address in full very soon.

That being said, let's talk about our guests this evening on The Rising Tide. First off, we'll be hearing from Magic Trick, a group fronted by Tim Cohen of The Fresh & Only's.

A prolific singer-songwriter hailing from San Francisco, Tim Cohen's Magic Trick is the genesis of his most recent solo output. Though not drastically stylistically different from The Fresh and Only's nor any of the other groups that litter the psychedelic garage rock scene from the city, such as Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees and The Mantles, Magic Trick's sound demonstrates the fullest extent of an artist's pursuit to fully commit himself to generate quality songs as often as humanly possible.

Tune into the program tonight to hear a portion of the interview we recorded with Tim Cohen and the rest of Magic Trick at the Crepe Place this past monday, when they opened for Six Organs of Admittance in stellar fashion.

Also on the program: Corpus Callosum from San Jose and local folk-pop musicians, Man Go.

The She's and Hod on The Rising Tide this friday night!

Hey all,

Just wanted to let you know that you can follow us on Twitter right here. I'm not promising a whole lot, but if you do follow us, chances are you'll be the first to hear announcements about our upcoming interviews, the first to see photos of recent performances we've put up on our Picasa page, and the first to hear about all upcoming news and things concerning your favorite local music radio show!

That being said, let me introduce you to our first of two guests for tomorrow night's program, The SHE'S.

Hailing from San Francisco, The SHE'S are proof positive that making great music has no arbitrary age requirement. Much has been made of the group members' relative youth (they're in high school), but one need not delve too far into their music to find out that the band's ability to craft melodies with quality pop sensibilities reaches far beyond what one would expect for a group of musicians their age. Their sound can be described as indebted to the likes of the Shangri-Las, Herman's Hermits and the Beach Boys as far as structure goes, but The SHE'S bring that 50s-60s surf pop style of music into the modern era, having caught the attention of groups like AB & The Sea, Best Coast and Christopher Owens of Girls (who subsequently put the group on the map by having them open their Fillmore show last October).

The SHE'S will be stopping by our studio this friday night to talk about their ascension into bay area indie stardom, the pressures of being in a touted band at their age, and to perform a special acoustic set highlighting some of the songs from their self-titled (I think) EP.

After that, we'll be treated to a very special visit to the station by Hod Hulphers, better known to the people of Santa Cruz as ...And Hod.

A solo artist in his own right, Hod has been active in the music community of Santa Cruz for many years, as you can often spot him playing at the Crepe Place where his take on folk and music has found a home. That being said, the reason for Hod's appearance on the show this week is that he's in the midst of promoting a very special event taking place this weekend.

On Saturday night, Hod and a whole host of other musicians (including Little Wings, Sugar Shack (featuring Keith Thompson from The Groggs) and the Snow Buddies) will be performing at the Crepe Place to help fund raise for the Santa Cruz’s Bachelor Buddies Production Company's upcoming production of the film Johnny and the Golden Bouzouki. A parody of 70s action/adventure films, Johnny is Hod's most recent foray into the art of musicals. Hod will also be bringing the film's star (Johnny Diamonds) up to the station tomorrow night with him to talk about the film, his own experiences in music, and what the future holds for Hod.

Victims Family, Dan Potthast and Bam! Bam! on The Rising Tide tonight

Hey there,

With the new quarter fast approaching, expect to hear from some fresh new faces as our Rising Tide family grows to include even more DJs.

That being said, we've got a wonderful trio of guests for tonight's program. It's going to be one of the most musically diverse shows we've ever had!

We'll first welcome into our studio a band from Oakland by the name of Bam! Bam!

This Oakland based two-piece have been kicking around thrashy, lo-fi garage pop jams for the better part of the last year. Though the group has yet to officially release any of their recordings, they have been steadily building a fan-base, taking their no-frills sound with them up and down the coast of California and taking no prisoners along the way. Fans of Black Tambourine, Beat Happening and fellow s.f. lo-fi artist Grass Widow ought to take note of this band, for once they get around to putting out non-demo recordings into the world, their star is bound to take off.

Tune in at 8:30 to catch the ladies of Bam! Bam! as they come to our studio to perform some songs live in the studio and talk about what the future holds for the band.

Then we'll welcome Dan Potthast to our studio.

Once hailing from St. Louis, Missouri, this ska-punk legend has firmly planted himself in Santa Cruz. As a founding member of MU330, as well as the leader of Dan P. and the Bricks (among other projects), Dan has been making music for over twenty years. He's opened for acts like Streetlight Manifesto, continues to make music that appeals to fans of Buck-O-Nine, and is active to this day.

Dan P. will be joining us live in the studio tonight to talk about making music in his adopted home town and the upcoming show with his band The Stitch Up this Saturday night, March 26th at the Crepe Place, where they will be performing alongside The New Trust and The Smoking Popes.

Last but not least, we have for you a very special interview that was taped last night with Victims Family.

This legendary Santa Rosa punk band is world-reknown for their unique fusion of hardcore punk, jazz and experimental noise. As a Nor Cal institution that has existed for over 25 years, Victims Family have performed with the likes of The Dead Kennedys, Nirvana, Green Day, Faith No More, and hundreds of other incredible bands. Though the group has sporadically broken up over the years, they've come back together in 2010 to perform and re-release their first three records on vinyl, starting with 1990's White Bread Blues.

I chatted up the group's guitarist, Ralph Spight, last night via Skype on a breadth of subjects, and if you tune in to the show tonight, you can hear our conversation in full. One of the things we did talk about is Victims Family's show this Saturday night, March 26th at the Catalyst with Catacomb Creeps and (Rising Tide alum) Noise Clinic, which is bound to be a hellraiser of a concert.

As one of the most infamous bands from Santa Cruz, Blackbird Raum have a reputation as folk-punk pioneers that preceeds them.

The group, which started back in 2003, have gained a following that far outstrips that of hundreds of better coiffed, more polished, traditionally popular acts. They've done so by refusing to compromise their sound or their wills. The group frequently takes their music to the streets of downtown Santa Cruz, where the size of the crowds they tend to attract has become the stuff of legend. Fans of Andrew Jackson Jihad and Defiance, Ohio will relish the band's retroacoustic sound. One that is driven by a fiery punk passion that may surprise those who are used to hearing banjos and violins associated with milquetoast performance art.

The group will be coming onto The Rising Tide tonight to talk about their ascent into being one of Santa Cruz's most popular acts, their upcoming performance at the 418 Project with O'Death, Helado Negro and Rising Tide alums Tether Horse on Friday, March 25th, and maybe tell us what the future holds for Blackbird Raum.

Our other musical guest for the evening will be Healdsburg's own Rachel Bockover.

A singer-songwriter whose output is all the more impressive given the multiple roles she fills as the writer, producer and performer of all instruments on her recordings. Steeped in the quasi-gothic folk of heroines Tori Amos and Elizabeth Frasier (of the Cocteau Twins), Rachel's music brings together her years of musical experience, empowering her soulful balladry with a perspective that is all her own.

Rachel is currently in the midst of recording her debut record, Tightrope Walk, and will appear on The Rising Tide tonight to talk about the process of getting her debut album together, and what it's like to be a young up and coming artist in her position.

Between rolling your eyes at the name of this zine and checking your tumblr, you really ought to actually check out this zine. Read it from cover to cover- fun images and a light-hearted approach to radical politics. This zine was made for people of all ages as a fun introduction to anarchy rather than some thick tome that is most likely used as a step stool in the bathrooms of students nation-wide.

Honeymoon & Birdhouse on The Rising Tide tonight

Hey all,

I know that we we're advertising a pre-recorded interview with Yann Tiersen for this week, but due to a screw-up that was entirely my fault, we weren't able to get the interview done. My apologies.

That being said, we're going to be hosting two class act local bands on the show this evening! The first of which is Honeymoon.

Recalling the likes of Dawn Landes, Alela Diane and Feist, this bay area quartet's multi-harmony take on indie-folk has caught on like wildifre ever since the band began performing together last year. The group's profile has seen itself rise as they have opened for the likes of David Gray, Jackie Green and Ray LaMontagne among others. The group released 2010's After The Flood EP to a rapturous welcoming at the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur, and have more to come in 2011.

Tune in tonight to hear Honeymoon talk about their meteoric rise in the folk music world, what it feels like to pal around with Phil Lesh, preview some brand new unreleased music and talk about their upcoming tour with the Truth & Salvage Co. which will be kicked off with a performance at the Fernwood Lodge in Big Sur on saturday night.

Also on the show this evening, Birdhouse.

Birdhouse make no bones about their sound: They are devoted acolytes of the Grateful Dead. In fact, the group began as a Dead tribute band back in 2009. However, along the way, the group began writing their own songs and building a grassroots fan base that has followed them loyally as they've gone on to perform at various venues around the city of Santa Cruz, most recently a star-making performance out at the Brookdale Lodge.

The Growlers, Mylo Jenkins, Tater Famine & More Tonight!

Hey all,

March is here! And as a special treat for all of you, we've lined up an incredible series of guests and live performances that reach across the genre spectrum! Check out our list of upcoming performers for more details, but let's get back to what's happening on tonight's show!

Our first interview comes courtesy of a group that sold out The Crepe Place last weekend, The Growlers.

This multifaceted psychedelic surf rock act rocketed out of Costa Mesa, California in 2006, and haven't looked back since. The band's music shares the same musical shelf space as garage rock luminaries like Ty Segall, JEFF The Brotherhood and The Fresh & Only's but also recall the psychedelic strain of The Entrance Band and The Mantles.

Propelled by the success of 2010's Hot Tropics, The Growlers have been tearing it up all over the country and even around the world. Performances at the FYF Fest in LA (which we covered back in September) and this year's Noise Pop festival in SF indicate that the group is on the rise.

Tune in on Friday night to hear our interview with the group, what it's like to be an up and coming indie rock act, and what expectations they have of themselves for 2011 and beyond.

After that, we'll be playing host to one of Santa Cruz's most promising acts, Tater Famine.

A folk-punk trio from right here in Santa Cruz, Tater Famine have emerged as one of the perennial folk punk bands of our local scene, joining the ranks of similarly thrashy folk such as Blackbird Raum and Matador. The group has steadily climbed the ranks of the music scene in town, having played all over the city, and are quickly becoming a fixture in the city of Santa Cruz.

Not content to perform only within the confines of our town, Tater Famine have taken their act on the road to promote 2009's An Untimely Fashion, and have performed all over the coast and even in Europe.

The Tater Famine boys will be bringing their eclectic sound to our studio up in the forest tonight around 8:30 to play a few songs, talk about their upcoming show at The Crepe Place on March 17th, and tell us a few stories about being a band out on the road.

After that, make sure to stay tuned for our third guest of the night, Mylo Jenkins.

Mylo Jenkins is a seven-piece folk and americana act from Santa Cruz. Lead by Dan Kocher and featuring a roster of Santa Cruz musicians (some of whom perform in the local folk group Tether Horse), they band was on hiatus for a few years, but recently came to play a series of shows at The Crepe Place.

We'll be welcoming a number of the Mylo Jenkins crew to talk about their upcoming show supporting Jared Mees and the Grown Children at the Crepe Place this sunday, as well as what 2011 holds for the group.

Good People on The Rising Tide

Hey all,

The weather's been strange and my life has been stranger, so let's just get down to business and let me tell you about a little band that I know called Good People.

This rag-tag group of Santa Cruz musicians has been kicking it together since late 2009. Though individually schooled in different forms of music, the group music takes on indie rock, afro beat, math rock and dance rock with equal parts fervor and ambition. The group draws on influence as far flung as Fela Kuti, Discovery, Ryland Bouchard and Tera Melos.

The fivesome have pulled off a couple of coups in Santa Cruz, opening up for local folk punk heavyweights Blackbird Raum and also sharing a Crepe Place bill with the likes of Hermit Convention and Magic Bullets, but the band has stayed largely inactive since the summer, only venturing forth for a couple of shows. The reason for this is that the group has been hard at work completing their debut full-length (which has ten official titles, reflecting the band's quirky nature, but for simplicity's sake we'll call it Good People) which is bound to come out soon.

Good People will be coming into the studio this friday night to talk about their band, what it's like to balance the pressures of being students at UCSC while also trying to make a band work, and what 2011 holds for the group.

Zine of The Week (18 February 2011): Electric Annihilation #1

It's unfortunate that this review is so late in coming but it's better late than never. Electric Annihilation #1 is one of those rare zines that not only reviews and questions music but isn't afraid to cover the bands that aren't being covered. This zine was put together partially by a group of ex-desert rats at large in the bay area, one of them, Tynan Krakoff runs DNT records an indie label built upon a pile of cassette tapes and vinyl, you've never heard before and probably should.

This zine features a quickie-interview with everyone's favorite punk-rocker gone actor now DJ and spoken word artist- Henry Rollins, about the noise music genre and how it stands to serve the next generation as the rebellious iconoclast music that refuses to be co-opted and has actually managed to do this with some degree of success.

Getting a copy of this awesome newspaper styled zine might be a little tricky. There are a few copies of it hangin' around Streetlight Records where the free zines are behind the cash register in the front for the time being but you can also get one by going to the DNT records website or possibly if you chance upon it around San Francisco.

This week's zine of the week is Smart Tart #1 a sex-positive zine that is trans and queer inclusive and hails the bay area. This zine is full of cool images that appear to have been made by stamp, which for those who don't know, can be rather difficult. This zine has the classic feel of the chapbooks of decades past because of the type-writer font and cool heavily photocopied images.

Birdhand, Jeremy Lyon and more on tonight's Rising Tide

Hey all,

Hopefully many of you will profit from this extended holiday weekend and venture out into the cold, rainy winter weather that's finally set itself down on Santa Cruz to see some shows in the area. We at the Rising Tide will be giving you all the help you need to find out about great shows in and around Santa Cruz by virtue of the Concert Calendar we now have displayed on the sidebar of the blog! Until we get it updated with actual shows, though, make sure to check out Keith Thompson's blog for day-of show information for everything happening in Santa Cruz!

That being said, tonight's show is going to feature two very special local guests that are sure to delight those of you who tune in tonight:

Jeremy Lyon is an emerging singer-songwriter originally from San Francisco who moved to Santa Cruz to attend UC Santa Cruz.

Jeremy's songwriting prowess reveals the influence from classic rock staples like Tom Petty and Elvis Costello, though he takes the foundation laid down by such legends and brings it up to date (and funks it up) resulting in a modern rock sound that places his sound closer to artists such as My Morning Jacket and Kings of Leon.

His most recent work, January's Take It Back EP, clearly shows an artist who is growing both musically and thematically without losing one ounce of the ambition that makes him an artist to watch for in the near future.

Jeremy, a KZSC DJ in his own right who programs the show Devil's Music every Sunday night at 7:30pm with DJ Bobo Z, will be heading up to our tree cabin in the woods tonight to talk about his recent releases and his upcoming solo acoustic performance at the Santa Cruz Roasting Company this Saturday night where he'll be performing with Thema Tillman.

After that, we'll be joined by one of Santa Cruz's most promising new bands, BIRDHAND.

Formerly known as Brown Irish, BIRDHAND consists entirely of Santa Cruz musicians who have found success in other local bands, and the pooled experience is evident in the way that the band has played things cool and calm, opening for bands like Mt. St. Helen's Vietnam Band and even the legendary Bad Brains like it's no big thing.

As a live band, BIRDHAND draws on the blunt force derived from one of their chief influences, Queens of the Stone Age, but as music from their forthcoming-yet-untitled EP leaks out, the band is evidently taking a more adventurous, nuanced path with their music. One that while seemingly just consisting of balls-out rock n' roll, has more to offer than meets the eye.

BIRDHAND will be joining us on Friday night to talk about their forthcoming EP and what 2011 holds for the group.

Birdhouse, Gwyneth & Monko, and Laura Meyer Rock The Crepe Place

The Rising Tide is all about great local music, and as a lover of the local music scene here in Santa Cruz I make a point of hitting up as many shows as possible each month. Last Wednesday, February 9th, I was able to hear some extraordinary local live music at one of Santa Cruz's gems of a venue, The Crepe Place. Unfortunately, I missed out on the first act of the evening, which consisted of the musical talent of Laura Meyer who I heard had an excellent show.

When I did finally arrive, the house was cool and calm for the second act as the two man band, Gwyneth & Monko played their signature Americana rock music. Listeners were completely engaged by the duo who truly sang and played their hearts out. Each of them belted out beautiful lyrics and strummed acoustic guitars.

Though the opening acts were a wonderful way to start the evening, it was the headliner, Birdhouse that really got the drinks flowing and the crowd going. By the time the amazing Santa Cruz jam band was set up, the house was full and the energy escalating. The fellas of Birdhouse, were able to turn calm into crazy as their enthusiastic fans began to dance and sing along with every song. The guys played several of their well-known hits as well as much of their new music.

The show at The Crepe Place was terrific fun and I strongly recommend to our readers and listeners to always check out local shows and to keep an ear out for Birdhouse; a band on the rise and soon to be on The Rising Tide!

John Vanderslice, Skeletal System & Audiafauna on The Rising Tide

Hey all,

It's the second week of February, and we here on The Rising Tide are going to heat things up with a trio of performers that are sure to match the warmth of this indian winter we're having up here in sunny Santa Cruz.

First off, we'll be hearing from one of San Francisco's most prolific artists, John Vanderslice.

With a career spanning nearly two decade, John has recorded with the likes of The Mountain Goats, Death Cab for Cutie, Beulah, Spoon and Mates of State, and also fronted the band MK Ultra. Aside from that, he has steadily put out solo records since 2000's Mass Suicide Occult Figurines, most recently releasing his collaboration with the Magik*Magik Orchestra titled White Wilderness (you can listen to a preview of the record here).

John is also a major musical force in the city, not only constructing one of the city's most treasured recording locales, Tiny Telephone studios, but serving on the board of advisers for The Bay Bridged and teaching songwriting classes for grade school children at a local non-profit organization.

We'll be talking with John before he takes the stage tonight at The Crepe Place (with Hod opening) about White Wilderness, how he views his role as a stalwart of San Francisco's independent music scene, and what the future holds for him and his music.

After that, we'll welcome our first of two live local acts, Skeletal System.

This two piece from San Francisco have been quickly making a name for themselves, exhibiting their own take on murky darkwave shoegaze very much in the vein of artists like School of Seven Bells, Memoryhouse and Tan Dollar, while having shared the stage with artists such as Sunbeam Rd., Woodsman and Maus Haus.

Skeletal System released a 5 song EP and single for Small Talk / Static Eyes last year that you can listen to here on their bandcamp page. Make sure to tune in and hear the group perform some of their songs and talk about what 2011 holds for Skeletal System.

To round out the show, we'll be welcoming in Santa Cruz's own Audiafauna into the studio.

This local six-piece has taken it's indie folk-meets-electronic music sound all over the country, and is just coming off of a successful Kickstarter campaign to finance their debut full-length record that will be out sometime in the new year! Kelly Koval's vocals recall Cat Power's Chan Marshall, and the band's fusion of traditional folk instrumentation and electronic beat-making technology set them far apart from the rest of the field. Audiafauna will enter our studio on friday night to talk about their band's whirlwind-like rise to the top of the local scene, and what 2011 has in store for the group.

The Rising Tide isn't just a place for new and local bands but also for artistic expression locally. With that, I must admit that this week's zine comes from Australia. We are setting the bar pretty high to start. Below is the cover of this art zine of epic proportions.

This zine contains experimental poetry that to me reflects the disconnected aspect of a society that is stuck in the state of increasing connectedness with an increasing disconnectedness. As technology makes everyone better connected the more people seem to reject it. Also, this slick zine beats your dumpstered coffee table book of the history of bowling (maybe not) and offers up a whole new level of creative combination. Finish Ticket // Ayana and the Queers

Last week we had Blackbird Blackbird and Old Arc come into the station and perform live, which was amazing. After they performed, we carried on with a unique performance by The Mystery Lights. If you didn't get a chance to hear them, please check out all of the above artists by clicking on their names :]!

We have an exciting lineup planned for tonight, February 4th.

First we have Finish Ticket, a young band who has already opened for the 2010 Not So Silent Night show. Finish Ticket is an alternative/indie pop band from the San Francisco Bay area, made up of five young musicians. In September of 2009, they released their EP, "Life Underwater," which is available at finishticket.com. The guitarist of Finish Ticket goes to UCSC and will be joining us tonight - speaking on behalf of the band. I am more than excited for this band, they play amazing music!

Second, we have a local Santa Cruz band, who call themselves Ayana and the Queers, but say they are unsure about keeping the name. Any suggestions? Either way, they are new and have a lot of energy, so tune in for a fun interview and new songs! Ayana and the Queers also have an upcoming show - most likely on Valentine's Day at the Blue Lagoon, so stay tuned for more information.

PB&J RIDE STRIKES BACK: Tour De Franzia. A hit? I think yes.

The PB&J ride is an unbelievable mass bike ride that happens about once a month in Santa Cruz. Though the people who started PB&J (Party, Bike & Jam), were not the first to think up these massive group bike rides around the city, they are keeping the flame alive and feeding what is seemingly becoming a quirky tradition of Santa Cruz.

The energy of Friday night's event was almost too much to handle. It all began in front of the Clock Tower downtown, where what seemed like several hundred of Santa Cruz's youth gathered together eagerly waiting to accomplish their goal of partying, biking, and jamming. And that's exactly what they did. When the leaders of PB&J said when, the group took off, stopping traffic and gaining the attention of onlookers all over. After a victory lap around downtown, the group rode for about an hour before arriving at the first stop to hear some awesome jams. The bands at the first house were, James Rabbit and 2001. The energy in the first house was out of control as people danced on couches and hit into overhead chandeliers. It wasn't until the second location, however that the PB&J ride really seemed to make some musical history.

The second stop is where the epic Santa Cruz band, Of Melting Moons played. When the mob of bikers descended upon the little yellow moon house, home to the local groove kings, Of Melting Moons was ready to serenade the audience, face paint and all. The fellas' moon juice, which they have been crafting in their laboratory for the last year and half, was certainly flowing. People were so infatuated with the music that they piled onto the roof, banisters and anywhere else they could fit their bodies to enjoy the band's zany energy. The house was aching due to the sounds of the 5-piece jazz-rock mother funkers, who riffed on their all-original set, rocking and jamming into the night. They played fan favorites, including "Electric Elepants," "Shadow Gliders," and "Bubble Dancers / In This Castle."

Though the bands Grizzel Toe and Nessie & Her Beard were expected to play that night as well, their time slots were unfortunately reduced to nothing when police interference ended the music and the riding.

Over all, the night was a great success and I am personally grateful that I got to experience yet another PB&J ride. Keep your eyes and ears open for the next one!

Hey everybody,

As you may have noticed, we now have a widget displaying 5 songs from previously recorded episodes of The Rising Tide. As the year progresses, we'll be swapping in and out tunes from recent and past episodes to enrich your blog-viewing experience and, hopefully, entice you even more to listen in to the show live this friday night!

Speaking of friday night, allow me to introduce the first of friday night's guests: Blackbird Blackbird and Old Arc.

Blackbird Blackbird

Blackbird Blackbird is the monicker of Mikey S., a San Francisco-based electronic artist whose work has attracted the attention of the press (The Bay Bridged, The Hype Machine and The Fader, among others) in recent months. Though firmly in the hypnotic and hazey world of chillwave at surface level, Blackbird Blackbird forgoes the vocally-focused approach of the genre for a more glitch-and-dreampop sound that fits nicely between Gold Panda and Baths. Remixes and covers of the likes of Beach House and Modest Mouse demonstrate that Blackbird Blackbird is an artist who refuses to rest on his laurels and not challenge himself.

Tune in on friday night to hear Blackbird Blackbird talk about the upcoming CD release of his debut record, Summer Heart, his forthcoming performance at the SF Weekly's All Shook Down event, and what ever else he has in store for us this year!

Blackbird Blackbird will be joined on air by the local group who will be backing him up at the SF Weekly event mentioned above, Old Arc.

Old Arc

This local two-piece has been burning up lately, amping up their psychedelic synth pop sound with a live show that's equal parts MGMT-inspired tribalism and utter youthful exuberance. Similarly ambitious in scope as Blackbird Blackbird, Old Arc have remixed the likes of Toro Y Moi and Local Natives, and their collection of demo recordings, EPs and remixes have been on rotation on The Rising Tide for the last few weeks.

Old Arc will come into the studio on friday to talk about their live collaboration with Blackbird Blackbird, their forthcoming recordings, and what they have planned for the year as well.

And to wrap things up, we'll be joined live in the studio by our third guests that evening: The Mystery Lights.

The Mystery Lights

Hailing from Salinas, CA, The Mystery Lights relentless garage rock assault has terrorized this part of the state for several years. Sounding like something of a fever dream straight out of a 60s psych festival, The Mystery Lights are poised to deliver the goods in 2011, including the follow up to 2009's Teenage Catgirls and The Mystery Lightshow. The band has been laying low for the past few months, but they are returning to help support the one-night-only reunion of The Spurts at the Crepe Place on Thursday, February 3rd (also playing are Sugar Shack).

The Scarring Party coming to the Crepe Place!

Hello all!

This announcement may be a bit premature and I will most likely post again as the time draws near but the Scarring Party are coming to the Crepe Place on April 28th with The Post Street Rhythm Peddlers. The Scarring Party is a dark cabaret band that has revived the sounds of 20's cabaret and vaudeville and mixed it with punk beats of a bygone age. They are descending on Santa Cruz from their native home of Milwaukee, a land renowned for its beer, post-industrial splendor and now The Scarring Party itself.

The band has recently released their second album and be sure to listen to the rising tide for a taste of dark cabaret more towards the 10 o'clock hour as April approaches. Also, for those who love dark cabaret, gypsy, and klezmer music, keep an eye out for the Underscore Orchestra coming to the Crepe Place March 24th or go see Gogol Bordello at Coachellafest, about six minutes from my mom's house, no joke!

I used to play them on my old show Baro Faro Death Circus for those who listened to it on KZSC.

Gay Genius and The Art Museums on The Rising Tide!

Hey all,

First off, a quick reminder that a number of photos taken of our last two Rising Tide radio programs, including January 7th's show with The Album Leaf, Carry Yrself Home and The Sacred Orchard and last week's program featuring Man/Miracle and Worker Bee are currently available online right here on our Rising Tide photo account! With that being said, let's dig into the bands who'll be coming up to our treehouse up in the woods this friday night...

The first of these bands is Gay Genius.

Gay Genius

This local two-piece group is comprised of Nessie from Nessie and Her Beard and Tyler from James Rabbit, both of whom are Rising Tide alum in their own right. The duo banded together as a result of a rapturous performance piece at one of SCUM's Panbandamonium events that took place last year and got together to write last year's release, Perfect Dark. The two trade harmonies and lead vocal duties over synth pop beats that recall Casiotone for the Painfully Alone and Soft Cell, among others.

Gay Genius will be coming on to the show on friday night to talk about their collaborations, their forthcoming live performances (including a show this Saturday night, the 22nd) and what the future holds for Gay Genius!

Later on in the evening, The Rising Tide will host SF's own The Art Museums as guests.

The Art Museums

The duo of Josh Alper and Glenn Donaldson have played in a number of folk and americana oriented acts both in Santa Cruz and in the bay area. However, joining forces as the Art Museums has taken their music in a decidedly different direction. As last year's Woodsist-issued Rough Frame EP can attest to, the band plunders the sounds of lo-fi indie pop music from the genre's forebears, echoing The Pastels and Guided By Voices, among others.

The group will be performing alongside The Sandwiches, The Soft Bombs and local artist Rachel Fannan (formerly of Sleepy Sun) at Slim's in San Francisco next tuesday, January 25th. But before that, the Art Museums will come on the radio to talk about the show, let us know about their upcoming work, and regale us with stories of being a band to watch for in the big city!

Worker Bee and Man/Miracle this friday night!

Hey all,

Hopefully some of you managed to catch either (or both) of the Album Leaf shows that recently went down at the Crepe Place, but they were excellent in my estimation. But now it's onto the pressing business set before me today, telling you all about our wonderful guests that will be appearing on The Rising Tide this friday night!

First, we'll be having the band by the name of Worker Bee come into KZSC for a chat.

Worker Bee

Hailing from just over the hill in San Jose, Worker Bee have steadily built a dedicated following over the last 4 years. The band's unique take on post-rock, noise and americana has culminated in releases such as 2009's excellent record, Tangler. Worker Bee's music would find itself comfortably placed in anyone's record collection between Tortoise and Nick Cave, among others.

The band will be coming into our studio this friday night to talk about their upcoming show at Cafe du Nord on January 20th and maybe spill the beans concerning their follow-up record to Tangler due out sometime this year.

Next up, we'll be treated to a visit and live performance from Man/Miracle.

Man/Miracle

Though they now call Oakland home, this indie-pop four piece used to call Santa Cruz home and met while going to school at UC Santa Cruz. Drawing on a sound that echoes artists as far-flung and disparate as King Sunny Ade, Wild Beasts, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Man/Miracle's debut LP that came out last year, The Shape of Things, shows signs of a band that has taken their musical prowess to the next level.

The Man/Miracle boys will be coming into the studio to talk about their forthcoming musical ventures, their experiences on the road touring with artists like Rogue Wave, perform a few songs live in the studio, and talk about their forthcoming show at Metavinyl Records this Saturday night with former Rising Tide guests Hermit Convention and Grizzel Toe (as well as New York's own Dinosaur Feathers).

New Year Means New Opportunities

This quarter The Rising Tide will be making some small changes and doing some outreach that all you lovely people may enjoy.
First, we are going to release a best of 2010 CD. These CDs will come in handmade cases and will feature music that was played live on our show and we may include one or two small clips from interviews. Second we will be releasing Rising Tide CDs quarterly beginning this quarter. Third, keep a look out around Santa Cruz, possibly further for our fliers, stickers, and CDs.

One other thing that our collective has been discussing is getting more involved in the local music scene. It's one thing to have bands on air but it's another thing altogether to go see them. So, time permitting, we will be putting together on campus shows for local/ touring bands and will try to work with local promoters to set-up shows in town. Please e-mail us if you are interested in helping or if your band wants to play a show and we will see what we can do.

First Show of the New Year! THREE GUESTS!

First things first... HAPPY NEW YEAR!

2010 was quite the year, and I'm going to look back on it someday with a degree of fondness in my heart, especially as far as this radio show is concerned. That being said, we're moving on and have a number of surprises in store for all of you! The first of which being the new blog redesign that coincides with our brand new Rising Tide logo/decal designed by none other than the otherworldly-talented Stacie Willoughby (check out the rest of her art!).

That being said, we're not even waiting until the actual start of Winter Quarter to whip out the BIG GUNS.

Yes, there is a Blazing Saddles reference there, somewhere...

This friday night, January 7th, The Rising Tide will play host to three amazing guests. The first of which is a band hailing from Santa Cruz called The Sacred Orchard.

The Sacred Orchard

This local folk quintet cites freak-folk luminaries like Akron/Family and Bon Iver as influences and has been gaining a quietly growing audience over the past year in the city. They'll be performing at the SubRosa Infoshop and Cafe's Benefit Show this Saturday night, but first they'll stop by the studio to play some songs and talk about their experiences of being in a young and promising local band.

After that, we'll be joined in the studio by Keith Petrocelli of Carry Yrself Home.

This will be Keith's second time coming on the show, and as expected of one of Santa Cruz's busiest music personalities, he has a whole host of shows to come on the air to talk about. Not only that, but we'll also be talking to Keith about his involvement with booking The Rio Theatre in 2011, and what future projects he has in store for the city of Santa Cruz.

But Keith won't be alone when he comes on air this friday night, for joining him on air to talk about the two nearly-sold-out-already shows taking place next week, is The Album Leaf.

The Album Leaf's take on folk and indie rock is as diverse in it's instrumentation as it is profound and appealing in it's quality. Never afraid to incorporate live electronics and loops into his music, The Album Leaf fall along a similar line of modern musicians such as múm and Eluvium, while the San Diego-born Jimmy LaValle has made Santa Cruz his home in the last few years. A pair of upcoming hot-ticket shows at the Crepe Place (see the link above) attests to his ever-constant popularity and prowess.

I'm fucking stoked to welcome The Album Leaf into our studio at KZSC this Friday night and ask about his forthcoming projects, his experiences as a globetrotting musician, and to talk about what makes these two shows at the Crepe so special and so explicitly local.

Seasons Greetings, NYE Show and more!

Hey all,

As I type this, I'm sitting comfortably at home in San Diego enjoying my two or three weeks off from school while being sick as a goddamn ~~tuberculosis~~ sinus infection-ridden mule. Don't ask me how that makes any sense at all, just roll with it.

Anyway, there won't be a typical Rising Tide programme for the next two weeks; the collective's shoes will be filled in by various KZSC DJs programming whatever the hell they want to. This is rather unfortunate, but given the amount of work we have put into the show this past quarter, I'd say that it's only fair to give us a break to spend with our families.

That being said, it's my pleasure to let you know that The Rising Tide will be programming on New Years' Eve, and it will be a jam-packed special edition that will be THREE HOURS LONG. That's right! From 7pm until 10pm on New Years Eve, you can tune in to KZSC (88.1fm or www.kzsc.org) to hear a very special edition of The Rising Tide. Will DJ PassiveTheory re-broadcast some of his favorite interviews over the past year? Will there be a super-special guest coming to the station to perform live in the studio? Who knows! (Wrong, I know... Maybe.) You'll just have to tune in to find out!

Also, stay tuned because there will be a blog post in a few days detailing the very first ever Rising Tideys! The Tideys are a series of awards with no actual trophies that I will bestow on some local artists, records, venues and what-not that will only be displayed on this website! Wooster and Nick Bane!

Hey all,

Quick post because I've been catching up on everything this last week, that being said here goes nothing!

Tonight's primary musical entertainment is Wooster.

What can be said about Wooster that hasn't already been said? They are a highly acclaimed soulful rock act that has graced local institutions like The Catalyst while also taking their talents both up and down the coast numerous times over the past few years. And while the year 2010 may be winding down, the band is planning to end the year with a bang, performing a special New Year's Eve show at Moe's Alley. But before that, the band will appear tonight on The Rising Tide to talk about their experiences of being in a band, and what it's like to be one of Santa Cruz's most talked-about bands!

Also gracing the studio with his presence is my friend and fellow blogger, Nick Bane of Bane Shows.

Nick has been putting on events at the 418 Project in downtown Santa Cruz, as well as The Mill Gallery (R.I.P.) and now 150 Pioneer St. He's a testament to one man ability to bring artists including Maps & Atlases, Baths, Memoryhouse, members of Vivian Girls, Blackbird Blackbird and the like. He'll be coming on the show to talk about the shows he's got coming up, and to discuss what it's like to be a DIY promoter in a town like Santa Cruz.

A Friday of G's: The Groggs and Getaway Girl live on The Rising Tide!

Hey all,

It's just about the end of the scholastic quarter at UCSC, and as the leaves turn to brown and eventually hit the ground, most of our collective members are hard at work catching up on the academic travail that they happened to neglect up to this point. Oh well, everybody loves a procrastinator!

That being said, we here at the Rising Tide, as always, are working to provide you the best in local music programming, as well as the focal point of spotlighting a different independent artist live in the studio each and every week. This week we have two such artists.

First off, let me introduce you to The Groggs.

This local garage rock three-piece is slowly becoming an institution in the city of Santa Cruz. If you want to listen to a band whose music feels like a five o'clock shadow repeatedly punching you in the face until you keel ovel, and then makes out with your girl while standing over you... Then this is your band. Echoing recent garage rock revivalists like The Black Lips and Mark Sultan, The Groggs are a band that have made a name for themselves amid a scene as vast and colorful as Santa Cruz's by playing loud and playing fast. They'll join us on The Rising Tide tonight to talk about their recently released EP 3D, to talk about their upcoming shows this month, and play some previously unheard new songs!

Our second guest tonight is a local artist by the name of Getaway Girl.

As Getaway Girl, local singer-songwriter Courtney Jones displays her virtuosity with the piano, crafting gorgeous and captivating songs in the vein of fellow piano-based singer-songwriters like Regina Spektor. Getaway Girl imbues a familiar style of music with a fresh new perspective, using her experiences in the world to break away from the pack and set herself apart from everyone else. Tune in Friday night at 8:30 to hear Getaway Girl perform songs from her new EP, Say It Through The Flowers, and to hear about her upcoming performance next Friday night at the Asana Tea House in downtown Santa Cruz.

This has been an insanely busy week, but we here at the Rising Tide are working to provide you the best in local music programming, as well as the focal point of spotlighting a different independent artist live in the studio each and every week.

For tonight's Artist Spotlight, we'll be hosting SLO's very own Morgan Enos, a solo artist who performs under the monicker sea birds.

Morgan's take on slow-burning electric folk music exemplifies his talents as a promising singer-songwriter, one whose songs have a depth to them that is impossible to write off as deliberately minimalist or simplistic. We're very fortunate to have sea birds grace our studio, and you should tune in this Friday night to hear from the SLO native, as well as hear him play a couple of tune on-air.

We at The Rising Tide are trying to bring you guys the best in local music and music that happens to be coming through this town. It takes a considerable amount of effort to put on this program, and it seems like every single week we're scrambling together to put a show on for everyone.

I really want this to change. I want to be able to set up guests in advance so that we can promote the goings-on of The Rising Tide before the day of the show. If you are a local band and would like to get on the radio for an intimate performance and interview, or if you know a local band that would love to be on the radio, please for the love of fucking god let us know.

Email us at therisingtideonkzsc@gmail.com. Please. We want to profile local musicians, but it is really fucking hard to spend the time contacting every single band in (and around) Santa Cruz about appearing on the show. I just think this system is broken; this is a resource that people should be taking advantage of, not something that should be haphazardly thrown together every single week.

I know none of this is going to change no matter how hard I try to get people to cooperate with me, and that sucks. That being said, keep an eye out because at some point this weekend we'll be putting up some of the photos taken at last week's episode of The Rising Tide with the members of FolkYeah! and Grizzle Toe.

TRT 11/5/10 - Toes n' Folk

Hey all,

Sorry for keeping quiet this week. We've been working up to the last minute in trying to put together an awesome show to kick-start the month of November, and I think we've assembled an impressive lineup for tonight!

First off, we'll be hearing from Britt Govea, the man behind FolkYeah! productions. Britt has, in recent years, established his organization as a linchpin in Nor Cal's indie rock, psychedelic rock and (naturally) folk circles.

He's brought the likes of Animal Collective, The Arcade Fire, Beach House, Conor Oberst, The XX, Dirty Projectors and Cat Power to our neck of the woods, and has also featured local artists such as Mountain Animal Hospital and Sleepy Sun. His booking of the Brookdale Lodge has made it a local music hotspot.

Tune in to hear Britt talk about FolkYeah, it's recent run of successful shows in and around the Santa Cruz area, and perhaps some interesting news concerning the Dean Wareheim (Galaxie 500) show at Don Quixote's next Friday night...

Not only that, but The Rising Tide will play host this week to Santa Cruz's very own Grizzel Toe. Born from the ashes of one of SC's most exciting bands, Grizzel Toe re-emerged this summer and garnered enough attention to open for Wavves at the Crepe Place without having any songs made public! (or... at least none on myspace).

Believe the hype.

These Sonic Youth disciples will be coming in to the studio tonight at 8:30 to talk about their new project, where they think their music will take them, and when (if?) we might be able to get any of their recorded material.

Pledge Drive Happenings This Friday Night!!!

Hey all,

As you may or may not know, this week is KZSC's fall pledge drive. This is the one time of the year where the little radio station in the forest asks folks like you to give what you can to our radio station and, in return, we'll send you guys some cool gifts ranging from KZSC t-shirts to CDs of your favorite artists and even some tickets to shows in and around the Santa Cruz area.

Also, we at the Rising Tide have been busy at work preparing a show befitting such an important event for this Friday night.

Behold, the fruits of our labor!

First off, we managed to get an interview with one of the most promising Bay Area bands of the year, The Morning Benders, whose newest release Big Echo has earned the praise of critics both near and far.

Four-square.

DJ Rigmarole caught lead singer Chris Chu before the Morning Benders took the stage at the Rio Theatre last Friday night, and you'll be able to listen to hear what the indie rock frontman had to say about life, music, and whatever else was on his mind this Friday night at 8:30pm.

Also, last but certainly not least, this week's live local music spotlight will shine brightly on Santa Cruz's very own San Narciso.

Fine, upstanding citizens or criminal masterminds? YOU DECIDE.

The post-punk trio is in the midst of gearing up for the long-anticipated release of their debut EP, Friend Prices, which you can check out here at their BandCamp. The aforementioned release will take place this upcoming Sunday, October 24th at the Crepe Place where the bay area's own French Miami and XOXO will join San Narciso for some good jams with good people. But before then, San Narciso will come into KZSC's on-air studio to talk about Friend Prices and why you should be as excited as I am for it.

This week on the Rising Tide we'll be playing host to a group of Santa Cruz musicians who are emerging out of hibernation to bring you their unique voice and, more importantly, to help bring the rock back to 215 Storey.

We're talking about Ghost Puppet.

They will be joined by the awesome Gay Genius project (featuring the leaders of past Rising Tide guests James Rabbit and Nessie and Her Beard) and a couple of other bands that I'm not exactly that all familiar with at 215 Storey on Saturday night, but before that they'll grace our studio with their presence.

New Quarter!!! New Stuff!!!

Hey all,

It's been a while since we've updated this here blog. To be honest... We've neglected it. Neglected it like a redheaded stepchild.

Some things SHOULD be neglected...

But we're back and better than ever! We've regained our ability to host live musical guests on the show and have also configured the show's format away from it's new indie rock/lo-fi rock theme towards one that is more keyed in on playing local music and bay area music on top of playing music of artists who are passing through town.

That's right folks, the likes of Matador, Mountain Animal Hospital and Sleepy Sun played alongside The Fresh & Onlys, Beulah, Deerhoof and whatever else under the sun happens to fit in with that week's vibe.

Last week, we did not have a live local guest (something we'll rectify this week, hopefully), but we did air a pair of interviews conducted with touring artsts as they passed through Santa Cruz. The first was with Baths, an upcoming electronic dance artist from the LA area who is playing the Crepe Place TONIGHT with El Ten Eleven and Sister Crayon. The second interview was with Tokyo Police Club, who played at the Rio Theatre this past Thursday and whose keyboardist, Graham Wright, graciously gave us a bit of his time before taking the stage. We should have both interviews up sometime soon for your own listening pleasure!

We also have a pair of new DJs who have joined the collective: Juan and Aaron! They'll be posting on the blog sometime soon (hopefully) and, until then, keep an eye out on the blog for further updates concerning The Rising Tide on KZSC (every Friday night from 8:30pm until 10:30pm on 88.1fm or www.kzsc.org)!!!

FYF Recap

Hey there, it's Rigmarole. I spent my Labor Day weekend in L.A. a few weeks ago, experiencing the sights and sounds of FYF Fest (or "Fuck Yeah Fest" Fest, for you purists). We expected to have a blog post on the KZSC website, but unfortunately, that wasn't possible. Anyhow, here's my rundown of the day, with some input and photos by DJ Passive Theory:

1:10p.m.- We get in after waiting over an hour for our passes, watching hipsters melt. The Fest is in it's seventh year, but this is only the second time it's taken place at Los Angeles State Historic Park, so some of it is still badly organized. The first bands play before any of the press gets in. (Sorry, Let's Wrestle, Magic Kids, and The Goat, better luck next year!)

1:25p.m.- At the Redwood Stage, The Growlers perform with white stuff all over their faces, (Paint? Flour? Zinc? That would have been a good idea, the sun was brutal.) Their fuzzy, surf lo-fi gets the crowd moving. Meanwhile, Passive Theory catches Abe Vigoda (Passive Theory: "Nothing special beyond a couple of new songs, and that they seemed to play things a lot longer live than on record."), and the Blow ("She played the one song I knew ("Parenthesis") so I can't complain. The fact she kept a running theme through her set (a story about the famous lesbian she wrote an album's worth of music for) was pretty cool, but it would have been nice to see some instrumentation.")

2:11p.m.- Bay area band Vetiver follows the Growlers, opening with the dreamy "Strictly Rule," and bringing a few breezes our way with their relaxed freak folk. The band plays some new stuff, and closes with with the infectious "More Of This".

3:00p.m.- Mmm, little $8 pizza...

3:34p.m.- I know L.A. band Best Coast has pretty much provided the soundtrack for many of you this summer (we've also been playing it non-stop at the station) When Bethany Cosentino took the Oak stage and launched into "Boyfriend," there was more than one squeal of "She's so cute!" within the doting crowd. I glance over to the side of the stage, where her own boyfriend, Nathan Williams of Wavves is laughing, smiling at crowd members, and not making his usual "Wavves face" for once. Bethany prompts the crowd to use sunscreen, advice no one follows, but they do sing along. The sun was high, indeed. Of course, she closes with the lovely "When I'm With You," to an enamored crowd of lobster people.

4:20p.m.- Passive Theory sees Titus Andronicus, but I wander off a little bit for some Southern folk by A.A. Bondy.
Passive Theory: "Being stage left, I pretty much avoided the insane moshpit going on around the area Kroqken was at, but you could feel the energy and intensity of the whole crowd wherever you happened to be during that set. Everyone on stage seemed to be having the time of their lives, even though everything other than bass and Patrick Stickles' vocals seemed to be completely buried in the mix. One of many sets that day that seemed to be mismanaged by the sound engineers.

5:22p.m.- Wavves attempt to banter through technical difficulties, and play while dust and beach balls fly though the air. The band walks off early, their sound problems were getting pretty bad.

5:47p.m.- I leave early, myself, for Local Natives, and their performance was easily one of my favorites. The energetic L.A. band power through their Talking Heads cover, "Warning Sign," with their distinctive harmonies and echoing drums, as well as the popular "Airplanes". By their closer, "Sun Hands", the crowd is screaming along with them. If you get a chance to see this band, do it. They are amazing.

6:30p.m. I make my way over to Ariel Pink, just as "Round and Round" is playing.
Passive Theory: "Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti are uh... I don't think they're especially suited to music festivals, or something. Everything seemed really out of key, and they were arguing with the sound engineers throughout the entire set (to the engineer's credit, I'll say that they we're asking for everything to basically be in the red, and when you're sharing that much equipment between artists there's only so much you can push before you break it and ruin it for everyone). However, 'Round and Round' is undeniable and by the end of the set the crowd was begging for more music but unfortunately they had to get things set up for the next artist."

7:11p.m. The sun goes down as Ted Leo and the Pharmacists get on stage and fire through "The Mighty Sparrow," followed by more fast songs, one right after the other. The crowd bounces along to "Me and Mia," but it looks like I was the biggest Ted Leo fan there. That said, Ted Leo is awesome, and I apologize to the guy next to me for screaming the lyrics to "Biomusicology" into his ear.

8:20p.m. The Mountain Goats come out in suits and blazers, "always so spiffy,'" as one girl calls them. Their set is one big singalong, from "Hast Thou Considered the Tetrapod" to their closer, "California Song." John Darnielle wears a wide grin as he waxes about L.A. I don't mind that there is a fine layer of dirt coating me, as well as my lungs.

9:45p.m. We watch School of Seven Bells, and wait for Delorean at the Sequoia Stage, which seems about 30 minutes late. The other stages' performances actually had perfect timing for most of the day. I'm impressed.

11:04p.m. I stop making jokes about the "coming of the Rapture" when they finally get onstage to end the night. I'm surprised to see some people standing still, as most of us are under the spell of the Bay Area band, and their use of cowbell. When the Rapture wants you to dance, you dance.

By midnight, I have achieved my goal of not getting heatstroke. And the bands were nice, too.

Hey all,

I know that this blog and this radio show tends to put itself out there for local musicians and local music, but we also tend to cover a (fairly decreasing, admittedly) decent amount of new and lo-fi indie rock from around the country.

Although this portion of the show might end up constituting even less of the show in the fall (once we re-write our program manifesto), myself and DJ Rigmarole do have a vested interest in upcoming and, dare I say, RISING indie rock.

That brings us to an event taking place in Los Angeles in just a few short weeks: FYF Fest

Indietastic.

Once known as the not-safe-for-radio Fuck Yeah Fest, the FYF Fest has played host to numerous Rising Tide-friendly artists over it's 3+ year existence. Aside from bookings the likes of which seen above for this year's festival, they have featured the late JAY REATARD, NO AGE, DEERHUNTER, CRYSTAL ANTLERS, TIMES NEW VIKING, THE STRANGE BOYS, BLACK LIPS, FUCKED UP, and many, many more. Their festival in 2009 was actually construed as a means to help accrue funding to help save California's State Parks, and the organizers of this yearly event have also booked a variety of individual gigs for FYF Fest-related artists, as well as having helped put together the Matador at 21 festival taking place in Vegas later on this year.

We will be covering the event this year on behalf of KZSC, so make sure to check out the blog later on next month for a full write-up of our festival experience (with photos!) until then, here are my most anticipated acts to see at FYF Fest:

I'd just like to say that I saw Wavves at the Crepe Place last night, with local Sonic Youth-disciples GRIZZLE TOE who opened the show. It was a great show, with a moshpit that lasted all night, so if you missed out make sure to catch Wavves with Rising Tide-approved bay area artists YOUNG PRISMS and THE TET HOLIDAY tonight at 7:30pm at the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco.

This shit is MUUUUUUCH better than that dick bag Nathan Williams ever will be.

But onto the main course!

I'd like to introduce you all to this week's guest on The Rising Tide, THE TERRIBLE.

This local space-rock instrumental outfit has kept a low profile over the year, only emerging to play a couple of shows around town each year. However, with a brand new vinyl single (seen above) to promote, The Terrible have returned to lay waste to the city of Santa Cruz, and the first stop on their destructive path will be KZSC Santa Cruz this Friday night when the Terrible will be our guests on The Rising Tide. We'll be talking about their newest recording, what their views on Santa Cruz are, and whatever else happens under the sun.

Hellooooooo everybody!

Hope you're all having a lovely Wednesday. I am, because we have some great news, but first, let's get down to business and talk about this week's guests!

Santa Cruz is home to a number of venues, but one venue in particular has played host to more incredible shows during my time living in this town, and that is the Crepe Place. There are many figures who help run the show at The Crepe, but none are more prominent than Keith Petrocelli of Carry Yrself Home.

Having produced several local festivals over the year, and bookings shows running the gamut from Abe Vigoda to Judgment Day to Deer Tick to Wavves, Keith will be our first guest this upcoming Friday night, where he'll sit down in our little treehouse in the mountains to discuss several upcoming CYH shows, talk about his history in the Santa Cruz local music scene, and just generally chill out.

After that, we'll be featuring an interview with LA's own HoneyHoney.
This folk-rock duo is getting set to tackle The Catalyst on Monday, August 16th, as they open for Xavier Rudd. As a hard-working touring band, be sure to tune in and listen to hear what this So. Cal. act has to say about Santa Cruz, their experiences on the road, and what challenges await them.

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL!

For it's my pleasure to inform you all that Oakland's own Mouse Heaven will be our musical guests of the evening.

This bay area quartet's take on folk music is at times haunting, but always engaging. They aren't afraid to openly shift styles, going from slow-paced ballads to driving lo-fi fuzz rock in a matter of 2 to 3 songs. Also, Mouse Heaven were voted in to play at the Free For All festival in Los Angeles (on August 15th) where they'll be playing alongside such talent as Akron/Family, Active Child and Langhorn Slim.

Man, we're going to have like... 30 minutes for lo-fi indie rock this week. Goddamn.

A double dose of local goodness

Hey there,

The Rising Tide usually features one local artist interview-and-performance-smorgasbord-type-thing each and every week, and with the exception of a few off weeks (due to illness, time mismanagement, etc.) we've stuck to that script.

Last week we decided to tamper with the show format a little bit and air an off-site interview with a group in Spirits of the Red City who visited our town and played a lovely show at SubRosa just over a week ago. In my opinion, it was a great success, so if I were you, I'd count on hearing more off-site interviews with artists playing Santa Cruz in the future!

Which brings me to this upcoming Friday night, where the show will play host to two special live studio interviews.

First off, Folk Yeah!'s Britt Govea has, in recent years, established his organization as a linchpin in Nor Cal's indie rock, psychedelic rock and (naturally) folk circles.
In addition to bringing artists as far-reaching and diverse as Animal Collective, Beach House, The Black Angels, The XX, Earth and Bert Jansch to our neck of the woods, Britt has also featured local artists such as Mountain Animal Hospital and Sleepy Sun, and helped make the Brookdale Lodge a local music hotspot.

A DJ in his own right (with a penchant for digging deep into his music library for psychedelia-tinged records from the 60s and 70s), Britt Govea will be coming on the show to talk about upcoming FolkYeah! shows, his own perspective and experiences on being a concert promoter, and to help give away tickets to the upcoming Akron/Family show at the Brookdale Lodge on Saturday, August 14th!

Our second guests this upcoming Friday night will be a band playing at The Crepe Place the following night, opening for Cannons & Clouds and Summer Darling; their name is Monsters Are Not Myths.

This local quartet has existed in different incarnations since 2004, and they are in the midst of riding the praise of their 2nd and most recent LP (2009's Corporate Growth).

At times recalling Son Volt, Spoon and Ryan Adams, Monsters Are Not Myths are going to take their lighthearted-at-times tunes and strip them down for this Friday's show. Tune in to catch them play live in the KZSC studio and answer some questions about their project!

Hello all, Rigamarole here. I guess this is my first blog post. Cool.

Anyways, you're in for a treat tonight. At the Rising Tide, we're working on not only bringing you the best new music from Santa Cruz, but also great music that passes through our lovely little city.

Last weekend I caught a great performance by Minneapolis folk band, Spirits of the Red City, at Subrosa, with local acts, Pet Dander, which is our live guest tonight, as well as Madrona and Hermit Convention. They managed to pack 8 members, a cello, mandolin, guitars, drum set, viola, banjo, accordion, upright bass and a bunch of fans, or soon-to-be fans into the room, and made it seem like a huge, echoing space.

I caught up with the band the next night, before a fantastic show at Sunny Cove Beach, where they played right on the sand, along with another great band from Austin, Some Say Leland. You can hear the interview on the Rising Tide tonight, at 9 p.m.! Check out their Myspace, and if you can, see them tomorrow at Anno Domini art gallery in San Jose.

This electro-dance two-piece is comprised of composer Frank Wong and singer Emma Jean and has been tearing up a storm around town recently, playing to both captivated house shows as well as an impressive late-day performance at May's SCUMFest. The electrifying duo will be making their Crepe Place debut on September 22nd (opening for electro-folk balladeer Casiotone for the Painfully Alone), and will appear on The Rising Tide this Friday night, July 9th, at 8:30 to perform some of their electro bangers and talk about the trials and tribulations of being an upcoming electronic dance act in a town not necessarily known for churning them out like other metropolitan cities.

It'll be like this but with a lot less people... and you having to listen to it on the radio and such.

n mentoring under me for the last quarter and decided to take my offer of joining the collective. Her appreciation for indie rock and local music is something that I think all of our listeners are going to enjoy! You can also tune in to her solo Brit-Pop/Modern British music show, Keep Calm & Carry Headphones on Monday afternoons at 2pm!

They have often shook things up, be it within their guitar-driven sound or the actual members of the group, but haven't let up over the years. And in under a week, they will be bringing their unique take on rock music to the Catalyst (on Wednesday, June 30th) where they will be joined by other local heavyweights Street Lightning and Moon Cadillac.

However, before they make their way to the Catalyst, they will first make their way to the log cabin in the woods and appear on KZSC's The Rising Tide where they will answer questions about their return to town and what the future holds for this kaleidoscopic act.

A fixture of the Santa Cruz local indie rock scene for the last few years, they released their full length debut, Startled By Deer, in 2008 on Lovers in Heat records and have performed at the Crepe Place, the Brookdale Lodge, the Blue Lagoon and the Resource Center for Non-Violence among other venues here in Santa Cruz. They have also taken their act on the road and have played with the likes of Sleepy Sun, Silian Rail, Judgment Day and Loch Lomond.

Stunning.

But what about this band makes them so unique, especially in a city like Santa Cruz where bands tend to be constricted by the limitations of their genre-oriented scenes? You'll have to tune in this Friday to find out as not only will I be playing some choice songs off of Started By Deer, but I will be conducting an in-depth interview with the group and previewing some of the material from their newest full length which is to be released later this year. Also the band will be demonstrating their flexibility by performing a number an acoustic arrangement of some of their songs live on the radio! Lame jokes aside, it's my pleasure to introduce the guests for this Friday night's edition of The Rising Tide: HERMIT CONVENTION and NEW BENGAL SPICE, two solo artists who are going to BLOW YOUR MIND TO FUCKING PIECES, if you would excuse my French.

But who are these two mysterious gentlemen whose presence looms large on the Santa Cruz indie music scene?

What is Hermit Convention!? What is New Bengal Spice?! How are they relevant to my BEING!??!? AUGH, the suspense, it's killing me!

Hermit Convention is the project of the one-man, bass-wielding, face-melting giant, Craig P. He's been a fixture in Santa Cruz's local music scene for farrrrrrrrrrrrr longer than I've been around town, and with good reason to. Whenever I see Hermit Convention listed on a bill for a show in town, I know that there will be good times to be had, as he's practically the only artist in town who doesn't have to fill a house with cacophonous noise in order to keep a crowd attentive. Nah, HC is all about luring people in with the promise of simplicity (a man + his bass + a loop pedal) and then absolutely overwhelming you with the kind of lyrical wit and personality so many bands strive for.

Just keep on layin' down those vibes, dude.

New Bengal Spice is the solo-project of Peter Wallner, and he too will fuck your shit up. Even the mere thought of having Peter join Craig on the Rising Tide is life-threatening to say the least. Especially given the spectacle that is New Bengal Spice live; searing guitars and a keen pop sensibility that ties all the noise and loops together in a nice, in your face package. Peter also currently drums for local sensations Green Flash and used to be member of the band Sheena, so he too has been around the block (so-to-speak) in Santa Cruz far, far longer than yours truly.

I'm in ur local scene, tak'n da spotlight.

And with that, I will leave you all with this picture of a gorilla and a shark high-fiving each other while an explosion occurs in the background to symbolize the explosive prowess and team ethic of these two solo artist who, coincidentally, are set to release a split ep/tape/release-thing through 1019 records. Hmmm... now where have I heard of that record label before? Regardless, I implore you to tune in to KSC this Friday night, starting at 8:30 for more awesomeness.

Hey folks,

Hope you all tuned in to hear CP Willsea make some improvisational live noise music last night, it was fun having him on the show and I hope you enjoyed my interview with him as well. Audio from that show should be up by next week (I hope) and audio from the Grand Lake interview should be up sometime very soon (as in, like, the next few days).

SPEAKING OF GRAND LAKE, they invited their film crew to KZSC to film their performance on the Rising Tide and just recently uploaded a pair of videos from their performance (as well as footage from their recent performance at the Crepe Place). The Reel-to-Reel World of CP Willsea

Evening folks,

On this week's edition of The Rising Tide (8:30-10:30 pm PST, listen here), I will be featuring CP Willsea; local artist, record label owner, and pretty much jack-of-all-trades awesome dude from Santa Cruz.

Real revolutionaries rock in the daylight.

CP (or Cole) is not just your run-of-the-mill local experimental musician; he's involved in more creative and engaging projects than I can count. Chief among these projects is his record label, 1019 Records (seen here). 1019 stands out from other national and local record labels in that it is a cassette tape oriented record label, wherein the only way to access music released through 1019 Records is via cassette (which are sold via the website and paypal at a nominal fee). No CDs, no vinyls, just pure DIY craftsmanship without the bullshit involvement of CD pressing and the like.

Up in hurr.

Cole also perfoms solo (under the CP Willsea name) and contributes to two local Santa Cruz-area bands: WOLF CRYSTAL (sc) and PALM YARD (sc). When Cole joins me on The Rising Tide this Friday night, we'll discuss these projects, future 1019 Records releases (including new releases from celebrated local artists such as HERMIT CONVENTION, NEW BENGAL SPICE and THE GROGGS), and premiere a version of the interactive musical installation piece he plans to unveil at Caffe Pergolesi on February 19th. It's going to be great, so tune in!

The Rising Tide Mission Statement

Evening, eager readers and audiophiles alike.

First of all, I'd like to introduce myself. The name's Lee, and I'm a DJ at KZSC Santa Cruz.

Here I am, doin' my DJ thing.

For a long time I had done a show called Wandering Stars that, for all intents and purposes, was essentially a vanity show. The theme was one I basically copied from a similar show done by a San Diego radio station wherein I'd play 2 hours of moody, downtempo trip-hop or electronic music (i.e. Massive Attack, Portishead, Air, etc.). However, as I got more involved in radio, it dawned on me that I wanted to do something different, and in the winter of 2010 I was given the chance to shake things up a bit.

And with that opportunity, I wanted to explore a subject that had become of great interest to me lately; the idea of emphasizing rising artists both external to Santa Cruz (i.e. your typical national rising acts) and within the city (and, while admittedly stretching it a bit, being inclusive to all Bay Area artists who could really use the exposure) AAAAAND playing some classic lo-fi music (why not?). That is why I chose to do the Rising Tide; because I feel it is within my duties and responsibilities as a college radio disk jockey to provide the listening public with the kind of media that is not just "of the moment" or novel, but absolutely essential to their lives!

The amount of rock going on here is essential to your life.

That being said, I don't want to fucking dick around. I want to expose people to new and local art and creativity that befits the weird ass nature of Santa Cruz, not your buddy's lame ass Jack Johnson-by-way-of-Sublime dubstep cover project, aite? Also, if I do invite you on the radio, have some goddamn class: No alcohol, no weed, no legitimate or illegitimate drugs, and please try not to swear at all. And don't be a dick, either. Radio's a privilege, not a right.

Michael Cera just heard that you were being a dick on the radio. The shock caused him to stop playing guitar and make three more shitty movies. Thanks a lot, tool.
